I just finished reading “Lady Catherine, the Earl, and The Real Downton Abbey” by The 8th Countess of Carnarvon. (2013). It takes the history of Highclere Mansion through the ages from Lord Carnarvon (who with Howard Carter discovered Tutankhamen’s tomb) through the 8th Earl of Carnarvon who resides there now with his family. Very interesting. Takes you through the World Wars, repercussions of war in England, Jazz Age, & the changes on the estate and the lives of the various wives and husbands of the family.
The social life and customs of the upstairs and downstairs individuals, is very true to the television series. The nobility that frequented the estate during the early 20th century, the trials and sorrows of war did not escape the social ranks, and the children who were raised there.

Very interesting and it as a real page turner. Contains a bibliography that helps with all the people that have crossed the portals of Highclere Castle. Pictures acknowledgements are included throughout the chapters.

    A great read!
