This bookstore in Harbor Springs, MI is a true joy. Owner Katie Capaldi and all the staff welcome patrons with smiles, kindness and a solid knowledge of books. They are warm and so upbeat, so ready to talk books, one is drawn into the store and wants to sit down and stay all day.

More surprising than you might think, on the day I visited, the store was filled with people, mostly standing around talking books, enjoying each other and the books. Most of the folks I noticed last week were buying and so was I. The store and the books are irresistible!

Oh, I wanted to buy this one.

At the very least I should have sent it to my sister who has been wishing for it. Somehow I got distracted and let it slip away. Sorry, Sis.

This one I could not resist.

There are beautiful books everywhere. Many genres. Easy to find because of the excellent signage.

I’m told people gather on this couch and the surrounding circle area for great book discussions.

My bookshelf at home is happier with the addition of new fiction Bittersweet and a paperback, The Anchoress by Robyn Cadwallader, for my upcoming trip to Martha’s Vineyard.

I opened this blog, enthusiastic about the book conversations and buying I observed at Between the Covers. I can’t help but share my strong impression and opinion that of the many Indie Bookstores I have visited in the past few years–in Saratoga Springs, Ashville, Nashville, Apalachicola, Neptune Beach, Amelia Island, Petoskey, Harbor Springs, Minneapolis, Iowa City, Detroit and Ann Arbor (perhaps I’m forgetting one or two), it is unusual to see so much congenial book talking among the visitors.

According to the American Booksellers Association, independent bookstores have seen 30% growth since 2009 and sales were up in 2015.
